What is Tir Anferth?

Tir Anferth is a Wurm Unlimited community server featuring the biggest and harshest landscapes ever created for the game. It is built around four kingdoms — Albion, Northumbria, Mercia, and Wessex — each with its own lore, character, and way of life. Every player begins in Albion, the neutral crown, and is free to stay or pledge to one of the three kingdoms.

How do I join the server?

See the How to Connect page for step-by-step instructions. You'll need Wurm Unlimited in your Steam library, then use Direct Connect with the server IP and port.

What makes Tir Anferth different from other WU servers?

Two things: scale and tuning. Tir Anferth runs the biggest map ever created for Wurm Unlimited, and its Hard Mode settings (skill 0.2×, action speed 1.2×, characteristics at 5, no starter tools, CR 1.0) make it one of the hardest servers in existence. See the How We Compare page for a full comparison against 46 other servers.

Is it PVE or PVP?

Albion is a PVE safe zone — no PvP within its borders. It's where all players begin and where the neutral crown holds court. The three kingdoms (Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex) may have their own combat conventions — check with each kingdom's Steward for local rules.

What are the server rates?

The decided Hard Mode settings (D-012) are: skill gain 0.2×, action speed 1.2×, characteristics 5, body control 5, mind logic 5, fighting 1, all other skills 1, no starter tools, combat rating mod 1.0. This puts Tir Anferth at the joint-slowest skill gain of any known WU server, paired with action speed 20% faster than Wurm Online. See Server Info for the full settings table.

Do I get starter tools?

No. Under Hard Mode, new players arrive with no starter kit. You'll need to forage, craft, and work the land from nothing — the way the first settlers did when they crossed the grey sea. The Herald mission chain and Albion's furnished public buildings are designed to make the first hour legible.

Which kingdom should I choose?

That's entirely up to you. You start as a subject of the Crown in Albion and can take your time deciding. Each kingdom has its own character:

  • Albion — Neutral, welcoming, enduring. The crown where everyone begins.
  • Northumbria — Stern, industrious, unyielding. Iron and stone in the northern hills.
  • Mercia — Shrewd, industrious, pragmatic. Trade and clay on the harbour coast.
  • Wessex — Patient, grounded, watchful. Deep timber and earned trust.

Is there a Discord?

A Discord server and relay bot are being set up. Check the Community page for the invite link when it's ready.

Can I see a live map of the server?

Yes — a live map is available at map.tiranferth.world. You can also check server status at monitor.tiranferth.world.

What does "Hard Mode" actually feel like in practice?

The first week is: carry one log at a time (≈35 kg carry capacity, one log is 24 kg), walk everywhere (no riding until body control 21), queue one or two actions at a time (mind logic 5), and gain skills at 1/50th of the current rate — but with actions 20% quicker to keep your hands busy. Time-to-skill-20 is roughly 4× Wurm Online's. The closest precedent is Wilderness of Rin (0.2×/1.5×, no starter kit), which has lasted four years.

Will existing characters be affected by the Hard Mode change?

Changing the skill multiplier does not touch stored skills — anything already levelled would be out of step with new players. A wipe of non-admin characters at the same time as the Hard Mode deployment is the honest option being considered.
