The Founding of the Realm

No one agrees on who named the land first, but every hearth-tale begins the same way: before the kingdoms, there was only the land, and the land was hungry for hands to work it.

When the first settlers crossed the grey sea and made landfall on the southeastern plateau, they found high ground that flooded less than the river valleys, and a spring that never ran dry. They raised their first hall there and called it nothing grander than the Crossing. In time the hall became a keep, the keep became a town, and the town became Albion — not because its people were stronger or its soil richer, but because every road on Tir Anferth, sooner or later, leads back to that plateau.

The three realms beyond grew up around what the land gave them. To the north, where the hills broke into exposed rock and the rivers ran cold, settlers learned to read ore the way others read weather, and Northumbria rose from iron and stone. To the west, under a canopy that swallowed the sky, woodcutters and carpenters built Wessex out of standing timber and the patience to wait for it to season. To the east, where soft sandstone met a wide, navigable harbour, traders and potters raised Mercia on clay, salt, and the goods that moved through its warehouses.

None of the three ever agreed to answer to Albion, and Albion never demanded it. What kept the peace instead was simpler: a neutral crown is not a weak one; it is one nobody has found a profit in toppling.

Every newcomer who sets foot on Tir Anferth arrives the same way travelers always have: through Albion. You wake in the Throne Room a subject of the Crown, with the freedom to stay under its roof or to pledge your hands and your name to whichever of the three kingdoms will have you.

What you build from here — smith, woodsman, trader, or simply another face in the Crown's own streets — is yours to decide. The land does not care which banner you choose. It only asks that you work it.

The Four Kingdoms

Each realm answers to its own law, raises its own walls, and sends its own goods to market.

🛡 Albion

"Open to All, Owned by None."

The neutral crown where every newcomer begins — open halls, open roads, and no quarrel with any kingdom. Marble halls crown the plateau while a working city of timber workshops carries on the ordinary business of living.

⚒ Northumbria

"Struck Once, Struck True."

Iron, stone, and a hearth that doesn't suffer fools — earn your place at the forge. The northern hills where the rock breaks through thin soil and the rivers run cold enough to numb a careless hand by midwinter.

⚓ Mercia

"What the Tide Brings, We Trade."

Sandstone, clay, and a harbour that never quite stops trading — bring something to sell. Potters fire clay into goods that travel further than most Mercians ever will, and the Harbour Warehouse sees more strange faces than Albion's own gates.

🌲 Wessex

"Grown Slow, Built to Last."

Deep woods, honest timber, and a welcome that has to be earned season by season. The deepest standing timber on Tir Anferth, a kingdom built by people who learned early that a forest rewards patience and punishes greed in equal measure.
